''Out came the sunshine and dried up all the rain '', as they say, and that is exactly what happened Friday July 10th. Skipper Matt, 'Malahat' took the 2pm Yellow Zodiac with guests from all parts of Canada and Germany out of the harbour and headed us toward San Juan Island. The 'ORCA' had been seen earlier off Salmon Bank and milling around in small family groups. We encountered several members of L pod , one of the pods that make up the Southern Resident Orca that eat salmon. One female was 'logging' at the surface looking like a floating log. L 7, affectionately called Canuck and L 72, 'Racer ' were easily identified. A mother and her young calf were also observed. Tail lobbing and foraging behaviours were seen. The water remained calm for our late afternoon trip so everyone on board thoroughly enjoyed their wild life adventure with Prince of Whales. Marie, Orca-Magic
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
