'With an all girl crew, and Capt. Anna in the wheel-house we were bound to have a great time on the water. Anna took the 9am Ocean Magic vessel out of the harbour and south into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We were lucky to avoid the fog bank off in the distance. The ORCA, the fish eaters, were out there somewhere among the wind and the chop that had developed on the surface of the water. Just south of Trail Island we spotted their misty 'blows'. We soon identified many members of J Pod and some of K Pod. J1, affectionately called 'Ruffles' and J 2 'Granny' the two oldest members of J pod ,were heading in from the west with other members of their family. We saw 'sharking' and much 'porpoising' activity. They were probably chasing their favourite food, Chinook Salmon. K 21, 'Cappuccino' a large male was also seen travelling close by. They were all heading toward San Juan Island. Although our trip was a little bumpy there was much excitement for our guests. Another great encounter with the Southern Resident Orca. Marie, Orca-Magic
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
