The incredible sunny, summer weather continues on the westcoast. Capt.Tyler took the Ocean Magic 2 out of the harbour and navigated us east and then north up Haro Strait to Active Pass in the Gulf Islands. It was here that we encountered K pod and one member of L pod heading into the Pass with all the large BC Ferry traffic. It didn't seen to bother the whales as they traveled along one side and then crossed to the other, of this busy channel. It was amazing to watch these animals take time to interact with one another while working their way toward the Strait of Georgia. We observed behaviours of backward rolls, a spy-hop and numerous tail slaps that created lots of spray. L 87, a young male showed much of his head and belly when surfacing. We soon had to leave these magnificent Orca and head back to Victoria. Our return trip took in the sights of Mt. Baker and the picturesque Islands that appeared to float on calm, blue water. Another awesome wildlife adventure was experienced by all. Marie "Orca-Magic"
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
