Wildlife Adventures Aug 7th

The 3.30pm ' Ocean Magic' on Friday afternoon August 7th , with Capt. Tyler in the wheel-house, and our expert crew, Mika, Lachelle and Arleigh on board headed out of the harbour and turned west and south to meet up with two Humpback whales that had been reported. We watched these two gentle-giants forage in the cold waters of this region for a while, as they lifted their huge flukes to take deep dives. Soon we had to leave these fascinating creatures and headed over to San Juan Island where we encountered three members of L Pod, the L5 family group. Two big males and a female were seen foraging for salmon. It was a great day once again on the west coast, and our all girl 'Naturalists' shared with our guests, volumes of marine knowledge. Harbour seals were also seen on this trip, hauled out on rocks at Trial Island.

An early morning report of Southern Resident Orca off Turn Point , Stuart Island, directed the 'Prince of Whales ', 9 am yellow Zodiac north up Haro Strait. Our intrepid skipper Mark, ' Mallard ' was at the helm. We had guests on board from Brazil, Ontario, Texas and Victoria. We caught up with many of the Southern Resident Orca, the salmon eaters filing past the bluffs, South Pender Island. We could identify many members of J, K and L pod. They were in traveling mode and heading north up Swanson Channel. It was awesome to see so many Orca traveling together. Although the morning was a cloudy one, the rain did not appear and the water conditions remained great. A visit to Chain Islets gave us views of Harbour Seals hauled out on rocks. Flightless, gull chicks were evident wandering over the rocky terrain. It was obvious from the smiles our guests thoroughly enjoyed their west coast, wildlife adventure.
