Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure Sept 4

3:30 Ocean Magic
12:15 Ocean Magic

The 12.15pm Ocean Magic 2 headed out of the Harbour with Capt. Tyler in the wheel-house. We were traveling south to encounter the Humpback Whale that had been reported. We came across it foraging 2 miles south of Constance Bank. We watched its slow movements for a while and then headed east to view the Southern Resident Orca Pod that were traveling fast past San Juan Island. The Orca were close together. We could identify many members of J pod, especially J 1, J 2, J 41, J8 and J 19 as well as a few members of L pod , L 7 and L 72. They were really travelling fast coming in from the south, past Eagle Point, and heading toward the north and Lime Kilm Park. It was a magical sight seeing all these Orca in close proximity to one another. Truly another wonderful trip with 'Prince of Whales.'

A little change in the weather has now begun as the days shorten. September has arrived, but that shouldn't change the frequency of seeing all the marine mammals in these incredibly rich waters. In fact, the seas around here are full of fantastic wildlife, with increasing numbers of Sea Lions, Porpoises and Humpback whales visiting this area. The 3.30pm, Ocean Magic 2 vessel, headed south on Sept 4th to encounter a Humpback whale that had been reported. One the way we saw several Dall's Porpoise. We watched this large Humpback whale forage, taking deep dives and disappearing for 3-5 mins. A report of two other whales came in so we went to find these two male Transient Orca further south of Constance Bank. These turned out to be 'exotics', Transients that hadn't been seen in these waters before. A quick trip to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve provided great looks of California, and Steller Sea Lions as well as Harbour Seals. It was an amazing trip once again with different species of marine mammals seen.
