It was a bright, hazy day as the 'Ocean Magic' with Capt. Tyler in the wheel-house, left the Harbour. One of Victoria's tall ships, the 'Pacific Grace' was also heading out. Her tall masts and rigging were impressive. Our destination was to find Orca that were reported in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, south toward Port Angeles. These two whales are part of the K pod 'Resident 'Orca that eat fish, preferably Chinook Salmon. They were K 20, a female with her young offspring, K 38, a five year old. We soon encountered them moving fast within American waters. Not only were they moving fast toward the south east but off in the distance, following them, was a nuclear powered American Submarine and it escort vessels coming in from the west. This was an unexpected glimpse of an American naval vessel. Our adventures into these productive waters are always full of surprises and our international guests, from Manchester, England and other parts of the world, were thrilled with their first wildlife adventure.
