It was a magical day on the water this afternoon as the Ocean Magic turned west from the Victoria Harbour. We just knew we would find whales this Sunday. In the wheelhouse, Captain Shamus, 'Shamu' on his last run for the year, headed us past Race Rocks to Beacher Bay. Here the passengers were to delight in seeing the real top predators of the ocean, the Transient Killer Whale. The T41's, two females and the one male,T 44 were milling around the bay enjoying a lazy frollic among the kelp. It had been reported that these same animals had already eaten earlier so even as a group of sea lions entered the bay these orca continued to play to the amazement of all on board. A visit to Race Rocks on our return trip, included views of other marine mammals , especially the male seal lion haul outs. Our last thrill of the day was time spent with three relatively active Humpback Whales. These huge whales were waving their flukes and creating big noisy blows. We wish Captain Shamus all the best and many thanks for another incredible trip on the westcoast. Photos by Marie "Orca-Magic" and Clint "Orcawizard"
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
