Captain Gord took us out of the Harbour and headed west to catch up with three Transient whales, the mammal eating Orca, that had been reported earlier near William Head, Metchosin. These whales were the T 41's, two females, and a male,T44. They were busy hunting several marine mammals beneath the surface. The gulls swooping in over the Transients indicated remains of their kill, floating on the surface. We watched for a while and then took time to view the variety of Marine wildlife hauled out at Race Rocks. Several Steller sea lions that were cavorting in the channel were busy devouring salmon. Fish was being flung through the air by the quick movements of these agile swimmers. Our trip ended on a high note with some time spent with a Humpback whale that was busy foraging just outside the harbour. Derek and Nichola, our on board naturalists, shared their wealth of knowledge with the passengers on board the Ocean Magic, this calm but cool October afternoon.
