'It was one of those special days on board the 12.15pm Ocean Magic today, where young children were out enjoying nature with their parents. Even the babies of the whales were seen on our trip out west. Our first encounter was with Transient Orca, T 46's and T49's, six individuals in total. They thrilled us with a close pass off the stern of the Ocean Magic. Their tiny baby orca was clearly seen swiming close to its mother. After this exciting encounter we left the orca and headed toward three Humpback whales that seemed to be resting. These huge whales spent time creating big blows and lazily raising their flukes for periodic deep dives. We did briefly encounter another young Humpback Whale on our way to Race Rocks Lighthouse. The male sea lions at this protected marine reserve were in top form, barking, growling and flexing their muscles at one another. With spectacular calm weather we were all able to enjoy glorious west coast scenery and some of the interesting wildlife. It was another great Ocean Magic adventure. Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
