With our veteran Captain Shamus "Shamu" at the helm the Saturday Ocean Magic whale adventure took us out into the Strait of Juan De Fuca. Here Captain "Shamu" put the Ocean Magic in perfect locations to view members of L Pod. These resident Orca were foraging for their favorite food of salmon. We had several passes by Mega L41 one of the big males of L Pod. We also got to see L 77 Matia and L 25 Ocean Sun. Just a great viewing of these majestic Orca. While enjoying these great whales, Capt. Shamu spotted yet more marine wildlife, a pod of three Humpback whales. These cetaceans were milling around, tail fluking, rolling on their sides, making loud blows when surfacing.... it was a magic time viewing them. Naturalists Derek and Nicola gave us in-depth knowledge on whale behavior and answered many questions. We then took a tour of Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. The small islands were alive with Stellar Sea Lions, California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals and many many birds. October is a great whale watching month! Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
