Pow's naturalist of the year Derek educates guests about killer whales

Right out in the middle of the Juan de Fuca strait were 4 transient killer - the T100's who were swimming with a younger calf. They took very long 3-5 min dives then reappearing in any which way for 3-4 breaths. Always an interesting maze they leave behind them. We traveled onwards through to Haro Strait to see the 90 southern resident orcas, a superpod near San Juan Island. When we arrived members of J and & L pod were high speed traveling, speed porpoising to the shoreline. They traveled in groups of 1 to 5. When we departed, the animals started to move into a typical hunting behavior. Awesome seeing both the transients and the southern residents in one day!
