The 1pm Zodiac skippered by Prince of Whales veteran James "Radar" headed east to San Juan Island. We left the rain of Victoria behind and found the skies clear and waters calm on our trip across Haro Strait. We had guests on board from Mexico, Germany, London, England, Portland and Phoenix USA. "Radar" first spotted some Dalls Porpoise, we watched these gentle animals as they made their way past. We then set up to view the Orca. While we watched many members of J, K and L pods file past, almost in single file, several fishing boats were also fishing for salmon in and around the orca. Salmon is the main food supply for these endangered Orca. Our trip back to Victoria took us along the water front of Oak Bay and back along Victoria's waterfront. Just a wonderful adventure with Prince of Whales! Clint "Orcawizard" Marie "Orca-Magic"
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
