The 12:15 Ocean Magic set out from Victoria's inner harbor into sunshine and calm seas. Our veteran Capt. Shaun "Saltchuck" took us east off Trail Island, here we caught up with J pod. Our Naturalists Rhonda and Scott filled the passengers with their wealth of marine biology knowledge as we viewed these apex predators. We then took a look at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. Here we saw Sea Lions, California Seals and Harbor Seals. We also watched as several Sea Lions enjoyed a salmon lunch. Our Skipper then took us over to watch a Humpback Whale. The Humpback would take several breaths at the surface, then show tail each time as it went on its deep dives. Once again a super day on the water with Prince of Whales! Clint "Orcawizard"
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
