'The Ocean Magic 2 vessel headed out at 12.15pm on Thursday Sept. 17th to take in the sights and sounds of another exciting wildlife adventure. With Capt. Anna in the wheelhouse, and crew members Mika and Marnie on board, we were sure to have a great time in the sunshine. We traveled east on calm water toward San Juan Island where reports of Southern Resident Orca had come in. We encountered several members of L pod, fish eating Orca. Individual animals of L Pod , L 72 and L 83 were easily identified with their distinct ' open ' saddle patches. A tiny calf delighted our guests with its appearance. The Orca were foraging for salmon off Hannah Heights, San Juan Island. During our return journey we were lucky to see several Harbour Porpoise and a lone Harbour Seal. Several rafts of Common Murre, sea birds were also seen as was a single Humpback Whale just off the Victoria waterfront. It was an amazing adventure once again. Marie, Orca-Magic
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
