Heading out later in the day with spectacular island and coastal views in this area to be seen, calm water and sunny conditions, provides one of the best times to view the magnificent wildlife. It was just such an experience on Saturday afternoon when the 3.30pm Ocean Magic trip headed north up Haro Strait and out past many USA and Canadian Gulf Islands to encounter the magical Orca traveling across the Strait of Georgia. Our Capt. Shaun and experienced crew, Rhonda, Arleigh and Scott shared a wealth of knowledge with our guests on board as the Orca swam past. These were members of the Southern Residents Pods, J, K and L, and there were Orca everywhere. These Orca, the fish eating 'Killer Whales' that frequent these waters all summer long. It was an awesome connection not only with whales but also Dall's Porpoise. Our guests had big smiles when we docked back in Victoria's picturesque harbour accompanied by a spectacular sunset. Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
