September's weather so far has given us a little guess work. The familiar Indian Summer that often accompanies the month of September here on the west coast, hasn't materialised. In fact we are seeing some much needed rain this week, but that doesn't stop the animals from showing up nor the trips from heading out to find all that fabulous wildlife. The 12.15pm Ocean Magic 2 vessel with Capt. Anna and an all girl crew on board took our guests into the Strait of Juan de Fuca to view the Humpback whale that was reported. We spent some time with this illusive 'gentle-giant ' and then headed over to see some of J pod Orca traveling along the west side of San Juan island. Our knowledgeable crew, Mika, Arleigh and Marnie shared information with our guests. J 1' Ruffles', the oldest male Orca of J Pod, at 58 yrs, delighted us with many passes. One of the new J Pod Orca calves, born in January 2009 managed a baby breach to wow our guests. Despite the mist and raindrops all those on board enjoyed their west coast experience. Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
