. Our experienced Capt. Shaun and crew members Arleigh, Derek and Rhonda headed the 3.30pm 'Ocean Magic 2' , this Saturday afternoon, out of the harbour. We traveled west along the picturesque Vancouver Island coast. It was another sunny afternoon with some strong wind and tidal current. Some of the Southern Resident Orca, the fish eating 'killer whales' , had been reported heading further out west so we were lucky to encounter them at Beacher Bay. They were on a mission and moving fast through the choppy water. Their 'blows ' would fill the air as they passed by. It was great to see so many of L Pod traveling together. L 72 'Racer' and L 83 ' Moonlight ', two females with their young were easily recognised. Their distinctive open 'saddle patches ' the area of white behind the dorsal fin, which is unique to each individual Orca could be seen. We watched them travel for a while and then returned to Victoria via Race Rocks. It was here that California and Steller sea lions could be heard barking and roaring as they jockeyed for position on rocks. What a great wild life adventure our guests experienced once again. Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
