The 12 .15pm 'Ocean Magic 2' vessel, August 13th with Capt Anna in the wheel house set off south once out of the harbour. We had reports of a lone Transient Orca traveling slowly east. It had been determined that this was T 14, affectionately known as 'Pender'. Transient Orca are the top predators in the ocean, They prey on seals, sea lions , porpoise, dolphins and small whales. We came upon him taking 4-5 breaths at the surface and then disappearing for 4-5 minutes. Our expert crew shared their knowledge of these marine mammals with our many international guests. We stayed a while with this large male and then headed to Race Rocks to view the California and Steller sea lions. Harbour seal and five Elephant Seals were lounging on the rocks. Many nesting Pigeon Guillemots could be seen. We had some cloud around today but the rain held off for this trip so everyone had a great time. Marie, Orca-Magic
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
The videos are generally shot in wide angle and are very realistic to what the eye sees on the boat. Please enjoy the photos for the telephoto view, and the videos for a boat based, real life passenger view.
