Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure Sept 9 12:15pm

September seems to be a rather unsettled month so far with the weather however, the wildlife out on the water is consistent and abundant. With Gray, Minke, Humpback and Killer Whales seen fairly regularly, this is a great time to seek an adventure on the Ocean Magic vessel or in one of the Prince of Whales Zodiacs. Capt. Anna and her crew, Mika, Branden, and Dan headed the 12.15pm Ocean Magic, Sept.9th, south and east to seek out the fast moving Pacific White-sided Dolphins that had been reported. We were fortunate to find these rarities and delighted in their amazing speed as they followed in our stern wake. These charming and rarely seen dolphins in this area, stayed with us for many minutes. They eventually changed direction and followed a zodiac in the same area. Several Deep -Sea vessels were observed sharing the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We soon headed over to San Juan island, Washington, where we saw members of L Pod, L 55 and family. A chance sighting of a Gray Whale among the kelp off Discovery island and circling military helicopter, completed our fantastic adventure.

Ocean Magic Adventure Sept 8 3:30

Today's Ocean Magic 3:30 trip found us only minutes from the Victoria inner harbour. Turns out that members of L & K pod were on the move across the waterfront eastbound towards San Juan Island. At first they were very spread apart, but did group up and started traveling quickly speed porpoising out of the water, it was an awesome sight! Big males porpoising out of the water together is such a momentous encounter. The animals crossed Victoria and continued past Discovery Island. Some breaches were seen by 1 big male (see photos) as well as more awesome group porpoising including one little wee one who would pop out of the water on their own (see video).

While repositioning the vessel, we stopped to look at a Stellar sealion who was busy feeding on some fish, and would also fling the fish around and tease the seagulls. We then caught up for another look at the last group of traveling killer whales, there were many whales in the area. After having a wonderful time with the killer whales, we ventured south west into the strait in search of humpbacks! Low and behold we found my favorite humpback whale (known as Bart who has a split fin) who was probably with his mother together lounging about. It's amazing for me to see my favorite baleen cetacean and to know that he has returned again - this will be his 4th year in our area. Awesome trip!

Our Capt. Scott headed the 3.30pm, Ocean Magic this Sunday afternoon, east and north up Haro Strait to encounter members of the Southern resident Orca, that were heading south from Turn Point at Stuart Island. It had clouded over somewhat for the afternoon but the Orca were out there, spread far apart across the Strait as they foraged. J1 'Ruffles' 59yrs, and J 2, ' Granny ' 99 yrs, appeared to be the leaders of this group travelling south. We identified a female, J 8 , 'Spieden ' 77ys old from J Pod. Several mothers and their young calves were also seen. It was a slow leisurely pace, not only for the whales but also the Marine traffic. The whale research boat, with its yellow flag was out there too, checking on identities of the foraging whales. Our crew members, Casey, Rhonda and Dan, shared their experiences with the guests. It was a lovely encounter with these mysterious and charismatic whales once again.

Our 12:15 Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure set into calm seas and sunshine. Our Captain Scott headed us East to a report of Killer Whales. Our trip took us past Trial Island, past the Oak Bay waterfront and off to Saturna Islands Monarch Point. Here we caught up with Orca. These were members of J and L pods, resident killer whales. They were working their way west through boundary pass. We enjoyed viewing these magnificent mammals as they past by, the water was flat calm and the sun shinning. We could hear the whales as the came up for a breath, and watched them part the placid water. This was a great day on the water with Prince of Whales.

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure Sept 5 9am

The 9am Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure took us East to Hein Bank. Here Capt. Scott spotted Minke whales, not one, two or three but four, These fast moving baleen whales were feeding, working the shallow waters of Hein Bank. These are the second smallest baleen whale, measuring up to 35 ft., typically 23-24 feet long. It was great to see so many in such a small area as we gently drifted in the flat calm water. Our Skipper then took us South West of Victoria and put us on scene with a pair of Humpback Whales. These gentle giants appeared to be in a resting phase. Gently rising to the surface for a breath then gliding back under the clam water. Just another wonderful adventure with Prince of Whales.

The shortening days are beginning to arrive as we head into the late summer/Autumn season. However, there are still plenty of whales around most days and ample good light in the late afternoon for the Prince of Whales, zodiacs and Ocean Magic vessel to head out to seek the abundant wildlife to be found in these rich waters. Saturday Sept. 4th, the 3.30pm Ocean Magic headed east and then north up Haro Strait to seek out the Southern Resident Orca, mostly J Pod that were found near Turn Point. We encountered several members foraging for their favourite food, Chinook Salmon. We saw several large males, including J 26 , J 27, J 30 and L 84, who seems to enjoy travelling with J Pod more than L Pod. Females and their little calves were also seen much to the delight of our guests. Capt. Scott, and crew members, Mika, Rhonda, Brendan shared a wealth of marine knowledge with those on board. With bright sunshine and a light breeze we all got to enjoy the west coast scenery as we returned to the harbour.

Ocean Magic Adventure / Transient Orcas / Sept 1

OK! so it was a bit bouncy during our travel in Sooke but we found them! Captain Anna said we traveled 52 nautical miles - almost to Sheringham Point when we finally caught up with the very fast moving transient killer whales thought to be T37a and family who is made up of females and younger orcas. The animals were traveling fast and against much wind and current. At times the animals stopped to check out what seemed to be prey sources under the water as they were circling around sometimes even spy hopping. One of the larger animals did a fully body lunge out of the water while chasing something, there was definitely some predation going on although we couldn't see what they were after. Passengers were treated to some awesome transient killer whale views, I have not seen these particular transients before so it was pretty exciting for me. With transients you just don't know what they are going to do! On our way home we stopped to look at Race Rocks where the many Stellar and California and some Elephant seals were hauled out. Our 12:15 Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure was a blast. Capt. Scott took us south, and soon had us viewing Humpback Whales. This mother and calf have been in our area for a few weeks. Then we were off to look for Killer Whales. It wasn't long till Capt. Scott found our whales. These magnificent Resident Killer Whales were working the waters off the southern tip of San Juan Island. They exhibited feeding behavior, moving randomly over large areas looking for salmon, and the salmon were even jumping out of the water. It is great to see them work the water for their staple diet of salmon. We had tail lobs, spy hops and breaching. Truly a great visit with this marine apex predator. Our crew of Rhonda, Casey and Michaela answered all our passengers questions and passed on a great wealth of marine knowledge. An amazing wildlife adventure with Prince of Whales. It was another westcoast summer day with warm temperatures, and plenty of blue skies. Capt. Gord, and crew members, Scott and Rhonda took the 3.30pm Ocean Magic out of the harbour and charted a course south of Victoria to find a mother and calf Humpback Whale that were slowly traveling south west. Their slow speed indicated they were in resting mode. We watched with fascination as this twosome took several breaths at the surface and then disappeared for several minutes. We left them to head east, and north up Haro strait, where we found Southern Resident Orca, members of K and J Pod foraging off Henry and Stuart Island. Several youngsters were traveling close to their mothers. We enjoyed family groups traveling past the Ocean Magic. Our return trip took us past Seabird Lighthouse, where a Gray Whale was visible among the kelp beds. With three species of whale in a three hour trip, we returned to the harbour beaming. What an exciting trip once again with Prince of Whales.

Zodiac Wildlife Adventure Aug 28 3pm

Our 3pm Zodiac Wildlife Adventure was set everything and more. Our Skipper Myles "Mountain Man" slipped our zodiac from its dock in Victoria's inner harbor and took us into sunshine and calm seas. We first headed south to a report of Humpback Whales. We caught these gentle giants a few miles south of Victoria. They were gently rising for air on the flat calm seas. It was a mother and calf that have been in the area for the past few weeks. Our trip then turned east as we headed off in search of more wildlife. Our trip took us past Oak Bay and on up Haro Strait where we caught up with Killer Whales. We enjoyed watching them as the came up for air, spy hopped, breached and tail lobbed. After a great viewing of the Killer Whales and on our way back our eagle eyed skipper spotted a Grey Whale off the southern tip of Discovery Island. This whale was working the shallow waters right in the kelp beds, rising softly for air.
A triple play of whales today, Orca, Humpbacks and a Grey. All our passengers were smiling after this great adventure with Prince of Whales.

Today's weather conditions gave both crew and passengers were treated mother nature at her strongest. During the 3:30 afternoon trip the sea conditions improved quite a bit although still quite bumpy, we were able to comfortably travel over to San Juan Island (Lime Kiln area) to view members of the southern resident killer whales. We saw mainly Jpod including J28 Polaris and her calf J46 and Blackberry J27 who pulled up along side of us surprising everyone ! (Funny how they can do that even when they're supposed to stay 100 m away from us ;).) Although enduring some big water even over in Haro Strait, everyone enjoyed their time with the orcas today and no one let a little over dramatic west coast weather take that way from them.

What an awesome trip today was! We started the 3:30 Ocean Magic trip by visiting our Gray whale called GRAY PANTS who was foraging off of Discovery Island. We then headed onto Turn Point where members of J and K pod were on the move north. The color and weather conditions were picture perfect. Families traveling together, activities such as breaching and lots of tail slapping! After all these years I finally have captured a breach (on video) in front of Mount Baker. The Ocean Magic sailed into the sunshine from Victoria's picturesque inner harbor. Our Skipper Anna took us east to Trial Island were she put us in an excellent position to view Ocra. We had all three Pod's of Killer Whales J, K and L. They were slowly making their way east towards San Juan Island. We enjoyed watching them Tail Lob, Breach, Spy Hop and Porpoising as they swam in the clear sunlit waters. We all enjoyed the magic of these special mammals, and our crew passed on a wealth of knowledge to our passengers. Capt. Anna then took us to view a Grey Whale. This gentle giant worked the the clear water, rising up in the showing its barnacle encrusted body. This was a great day of marine wildlife viewing with Prince Of Whales.

The 12:15 Ocean Magic sailed into calm seas and sunshine. Prince of Whales Capt. Scott took us west to Race Rocks and we enjoyed the sights of Stellar Sea Lions feeding on salmon. These huge sea lions were taking advantage of the tide sweeping the salmon over the shallow waters around Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. We then headed east and our skipper put us onto a Grey Whale. This gentle giant was working the shallow water by a kelp bed, rising up for air. This was yet another great wildlife adventure with Prince of Whales.

It was one of those sunny, but windy days when the waters off Victoria was rather ' lumpy.' Our intrepid Capt. Scott headed the 3.30pm, Ocean Magic vessel out of the harbour and south toward an area that a mother Humpback Whale and her calf had been seen earlier. Deep in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, all on board were given an incredible show by this twosome. What mother Humpback did, it would appear that the calf followed in its behaviour. For 45 mins we were entertained by many breaching behaviours, tail lobs and pectoral flipper smacks that resonated on the surface of the water. It was amazing to view those huge whales hurl themselves aloft and fall back on the surface with thunderous spray. Our experienced Naturalists, Rhonda and Casey shared their knowledge with our guests. A quick visit to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, gave us good looks at California and Steller Sea Lions lounging on their favourite rocks. What an exciting and wondrous trip with Prince of Whales.

Our 9am Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure was wonderful. Capt Scott took our passengers west to Race Rocks and gave us a tour of the small islands. Here we took in the sights of Stellar Sea Lions and Harbor Seals. Our search for more wildlife then continued on, Capt Scott and crew then took us to view 2 Humpback Whales. This was a Female Humpback with Calf. These two gentle giants slowly roe for breaths. The young Calf would slap its tail over and over then roll on the surface. We were also treated as it would breach sending a huge splash of water into the air. This was a magical day, all of our passengers had a great viewing of these whales. Yet another perfect wildlife adventure with Prince Of Whales.

Another sunny,summer day on the west coast and the Ocean Magic 2, left the harbour at 3.30pm Friday, to venture west to encounter the big marine mammals at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. It was here we saw Steller and California Sea Lions, along with Harbour and Elephant Seals. Pigeon Guillemots were also busy foraging for small fish around the rocky islands that make up this marine protected area. We headed further south and found the lone adult Humpback Whale that was foraging while traveling, and taking deep dives that lasted 5 mins or more. Our Capt.Scott, and crew members, Mika, Liz and Emily shared a wealth of knowledge with our international guests on board. Viewing all the magnificent wildlife the west coast has to offer makes for a thrilling adventure with Prince of Whales.

The Southern Resident Orca have been around in this area for 80 consecutive days now and as typical for this time of year, all three Pods, J, K and L can be seen somewhere close to either the west side of San Juan Island, Victoria or near Vancouver most days.Today the 3.30pm Ocean Magic 2 vessel with Capt. Anna, and crew members Mika, Liz, Dan and trainee, Branden on board, headed east charting a course toward San Juan Island. It was here we encountered playful Orca from J and K Pod in calm water and sunshine. We saw K 12 with her newest baby K 43, also one of her other calves K 37, born in 2003. There was much tail slapping and rolling around as males appeared to seek the attention of females.It was delightful to watch. Our guests were very happy with their sightings of these endangered ' ORCA ' that engaged our curiosity.

It was another splendid Thursday afternoon trip.

Sometimes being in the right place at the right time brings great rewards and wonderful memories. Our 3.30pm wildlife adventure provided just that. There is nothing like seeing wildlife in their natural habitat, free and totally alive. Our Capt. Scott took us to places where the wildlife demonstrated how very much alive they were, with behaviours of numerous breaches by a young Humpback Whale traveling with its mother in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.It was simply amazing to watch these huge whales hurl themselves aloft, above the surface of the choppy water. Farther east the waters were calm and we encountered many members of the Southern Resident Pods coming past Discovery Island. A family group from J Pod , the J 14's, with J 2 'Granny,' the oldest orca at 99 yrs , and 'Ruffles' J1, a 59 yr old male, in attendance. The smallest member, J 45, kept our guests enthralled with its very active behaviour of breaching. All the Orca were heading over toward San Juan Island, one of their favourite spots to forage for salmon. We left these beautiful creatures traveling east and headed back to the harbour under perfect conditions, where a young gull found flowers in the harbour to carry off. What a fantastic trip this was, and our guests were truly delighted with the adventure provided by 'Prince of Whales. '

Captain Gord headed the Ocean Magic # 2 out of the harbour to find Orca that were heading off shore near San Juan Island . Their direction of travel was to the west. In the late afternoon sun, we were able to see many of the tall dorsal fins of the males from J, K and L Pods. Initially, it seemed to be a traveling group of males, but then females with their young showed up and headed off in the same direction. There were several cute little orca that played in the kelp beds. All of a sudden the leaders turned back east and headed toward San Juan where they joined other members of the Pod. It was a splendid encounter with Orca, this Sunday late afternoon and our Crew members Scott, Rhonda and Michaela shared their experiences with the guests on board. We returned to the Harbour with big smiles and happy hearts.

Our 12:15pm Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure was set against blue sky's and calm water. Our skipper Gord took us east to Discovery Island. Here he put us in perfect position to view a lone Gray Whale working the shallow waters off a kelp bed for food. Gently rising for its air it broke the placid surface and showed its barnacle encrusted head. A true gentle giant. We then headed further east to San Juan Island. Capt. Gord was in search of Orca, and he was successful. We were soon on scene with members of the souther resident Orca's. L Pod to be more specific. The are the fish eating Killer Whales, they put on a nice show for our passengers. We watched breaching, porpoising and tail lobs. Everyone was all smiles as we headed back to Victoria's picturesque inner harbor.

Our 3:30pm Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure was pure magic. Capt. Gord took us east to San Juan Island and we caught up with our Southern Resident Orca, L Pod. We took in excellent viewings of L 41 Mega, L 79, Skana and the youngster L 113 with mother L 94 Calypso. It was a terrific afternoon in the sunshine on flat calm water. The magic of the Orca delighted our passengers and they rose from the clear water for a breath of air. Yet another beautiful wildlife viewing with Prince of Whales.

Under bright skies, full of sunshine and calm water all around, Capt.Scott headed the Ocean Magic 2 vessel out of the harbour, and east toward San Juan Island, Washington. The Southern Resident Orca Pods were heading down from the north and were foraging off Andrews Bay. Some individuals were seen offshore. Behaviours of breaching were observed by our crew and guests on board of Orca closer to shore. We identified members of J and L Pod. We watched with great interest as these magical animals enjoyed the abundance of fish in this area. Mt. Baker looked majestic in the bright sunshine, and a visit to Chatham and Discovery Island found the Gray Whale that has been seen often in this area. Harbour porpoise and Cormorants on a rock added to our experience of the wildlife found in these waters. Another wonderful day on the water once again.

It was one of those productive and most memorable days, on Friday 13th of August. With Capt Scott in the wheel house and an experienced crew on board, our wildlife trip headed out of the harbour. At the breakwater we encountered unexpectedly, four Transient Killer Whales that had decided they would explore the breakwater inside and along the outside. This activity delayed for a while, most of the air and marine traffic wanting to leave. These were the mammal eating type of Orca. Farther south in the Strait of Juan de Fuca we encountered 'Super-Pod ', coming in from the west. This term is used to describe when all the Southern Resident Orca J , K and L Pods, the fish eaters, travel together.They were happy whales showing off with behaviours of breeching, spyhopping , and tail slapping. It was so exciting to watch 87 whales in three groups traveled east. Our guests were in awe, watching all these whales go by, and if that wasn't enough, we also had a glimpse of the Gray Whale hanging out at Chatham and Discovery Island. What an awesome trip with three species of whale, and what great weather too!

It was a wonderfully sunny day once again on the west coast when our experienced Capt . Anna took the 12.15pm Ocean Magic 2 vessel out of the Harbour, and followed a course south and east where we had heard that 4 Transient Killer Whales had been seen. We found them this calm afternoon slowly traveling on the surface and then taking deep dives, making us guess where they would pop up next ! Our guests on board were delighted to see these incredible, marine mammal hunting Orca. Our knowledgeable crew shared their experiences with everyone. We left the whales traveling farther south and headed west to visit other big marine mammals at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. It was here we watched noisy Steller and California Sea Lions. Also some sleepy Elephant Seals that lounged together. We had an opportunity to observe rafts of Bull Kelp, the fastest growing marine plant during summer months, and to notice sea birds that included Rhinoceros Auklets foraging on small fish in the calm water. It was another memorable trip with prince of Whales.

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure Aug 9th, 12.15 pm and 3.30pm

Our beautiful sunny, summer weather continues, so considering a wildlife adventure on the west coast with 'Prince of Whales' is the best thing you can do while visiting picturesque Victoria. The Ocean Magic vessels and Zodiac style boats are heading out almost hourly these days to find the interesting marine life to be found in these waters. Monday, Capt Scott took our guests east to San Juan Island, Washington State, for the 12.15pm trip and we found members of J Pod Orca, foraging. We also saw several deep sea vessels that share the waters of this area with marine mammals. Later on the 3.30pm trip we encountered members of L Pod, Southern Resident Orca coming in from the west and with them was a tiny baby that had been born several days earlier. It was amazing to see this tiny, peach coloured baby being surrounded and protected by its family. They were traveling very slowly. Our expert crew members, Mika, Michaela and Liz shared a wealth of knowledge with our guests and Capt. Scott positioned the Ocean Magic so we could admire all the Orca as they travelled past. A visit to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve gave us good looks at Steller and California Sea Lions along with Harbour and Elephant Seals. What a thrilling encounter with all this wildlife the west coast has to offer.

After searching diligently for any sign of Orca or Humpback whale out west, we then set our sights on the many interesting, marine life found at Race Rocks Lighthouse. Here we viewed the barking California and roaring Steller Sea Lions jockeying for position at the top of the rocks. 4 sleeping Elephant Seals lounged in the sunshine atop their favourite rock while tiny Harbour Seals in comparison, could be seen basking on low lying rocks. Capt Scott, headed the Ocean Magic 2 vessel further east toward Chatham Island, where we encountered a Gray Whale. This individual has been seen frequently over the past month in and around this area. In the late afternoon light and picturesque surroundings our guests on board were thrilled to watch this young baleen whale forage beneath the surface. It was a wonderful ending to a delightful Sunday afternoon adventure, in perfect weather conditions.

With Capt Scott in the wheelhouse and crew members, Mika, Liz , Rhonda and Dan on board, we headed west in search of whales and other marine life. When trying to find whales we have to remember there is lots of water off Victoria and Orca that are seen in these waters are wild and can travel up to 100 miles in 24 hrs. Occasionally they are too far for us to reach in a three hour trip, as was the case this day. The Southern Resident Orca were seen in the Vancouver area all day Sunday. Instead, our wildlife trip took us along the rugged Vancouver Island shoreline and to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve where we saw Steller and California Sea Lions, Harbour and Elephant Seals. These animals were all lazing around in the sunshine and enjoying some pushing and shoving among the biggest. A few were catching fish in the kelp beds, along with Pigeon Guillemots. Assorted gulls hovered above. It was a fascinating afternoon, full of sights and sounds in pleasant conditions with Prince of Whales.

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure Aug 7 12.15 and 3.30pm

'The Ocean Magic 2 ' vessel took our many international visitors out to see the wonderful wildlife that the waters off Victoria, have to offer. Despite the much needed rainfall that the province of BC craved, Saturday was indeed a wet day for viewing wildlife, but we had 'ORCA ', Killer Whales everywhere. Capt. Scott, and his crew members, Mika, Rhonda and Dan headed the Ocean Magic toward the east where we spotted members of J and L Pod, the fish eating Orca, off San Juan Island, Washington. We saw the oldest female, J 2, Granny and the J 14, family group. They were in resting mode and traveling slowly. Both the 12.15 and 3.30pm trips had excellent views of these magical, marine mammals. Our expert crew shared their knowledge with the guests on board. A single, swimming Steller Sea Lion and several Harbour Porpoise were also seen during our travels as well as a Great Blue Heron fishing off a dock as we entered the harbour. It was another wonderful day of wildlife viewing with Prince of Whales.

Warn temperatures and ideal conditions continue on the waters off Victoria, so taking a whale watching adventure has never been better. Orca are plentiful most days while the Southern Resident Pods frequent the west coast of San Juan Island in search of Salmon. Our 12.15pm Ocean Magic vessel with Capt. Anna and expert crew members, Mika, Liz and Michaela headed us over toward San Juan Island this calm afternoon where we encountered the oldest member of the Southern Resident Pod, J 2 , affectionately known as 'Granny '. She, at 99 yrs of age, was in the company of other members of her family. A youngster possibly granddaughter, traveled along with her. There were may behaviours of 'spyhopping ' , looking up above the surface of the water, and' kelping ', where they drag kelp over their tails. The Orca looked to be having a 'whale of a time' in the company of family and friends. A glimpse of the Gray Whale on our return to the harbour made for a thrilling adventure once again with Prince of Whales.

It was a sunny morning once again on the west coast of BC and our all girl crew headed the 9am Ocean Magic 2 vessel, out of the harbour and turned east toward San Juan Island. It was here that Captain Anna set us up in a great position to see several members of the Southern Resident Orca ' meet and greet 'each other. Orca from all three pods , J, K and L were present including L 41 'Mega' and L 88 'Wavewalker', as well as the K 13 family group. Several large males were foraging off shore at Eagle Point San Juan Island, and others were traveling north close to shore. Migrating Gulls were plentiful with California and Heerman's seen frequently. A mother and pup Harbour seal were enjoying the calm water. It was a picturesque morning with calm seas and light winds. Our many international visitors thoroughly enjoy their first whale watching adventure with Prince of Whales.

Hello all. Well it's been a while since I have been out on the water as I was away in Mexico. Finally, I was able to get out on the boat and see some of the orcas! On the 3:30 Ocean Magic trip we observed members of Lpod in Juan de Fuca / Haro Straits - where the two converge. Earlier that day they had been spread apart foraging off San Juan Island. We heard that all 3 pods were together but we spent our time watching some of Lpod. It's always easy for us to first ID the large males - L41 and L74 who were busy chasing Salmon impressing our passengers. We also observed mother and calf pairs (need still to ID) breaching and porpoising about. There was no shortage of orca activity out there; speed porpoising, tail slapping, spy hopping and many breaches in all directions. As the animals were spread far apart, it was difficult to catch all the breaches as some of them were overlapping far and close by. I did manage to get some images of it for your viewing pleasure. On the way home we stopped to look at the harbour seals hauled out on the rocks of the Trial Island lighthouse. Thanks to the stellar all girl crew today; Captain Anna, Naturalist Mika, Naturalist Liz and Naturalist McKyla. Please enjoy the photos and video in the post.

Those clear skies and warm temperatures continue here on the west coast of BC. Our experienced Capt. Anna took the 3.30pm Ocean Magic 2 vessel out of the harbour and turned east toward San Juan Island where members of L Pod, were reported. We were able to identify L 5, 'Tanya.', a female, L 84 , a male, and the family group of L 54. These Orca prefer Chinook Salmon and were busy chasing after fish when we caught up with them. A youngster delighted us with breaches, spyhops and tail lobs. Our expert crew of Biologist, Mika, and Naturalists Liz and Danielle shared their knowledge of all things wild in these waters with our international guests. Although the water was very choppy at the time with some wind present, we still had great looks at these wonderful creatures in the white caps, including a close pass by the boat of a female. Smiles were big as guests departed from the Ocean Magic once back in the harbour.

Capt Gord and his crew of naturalists, Scott, Rhonda and Liz headed the Ocean Magic 2 out of the harbour and turned west toward Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. It was here that we saw Harbour and Elephant Seals longing on rocks. Under sunny skies this Saturday afternoon trip was on a mission to follow up a report of 'ORCA' coming in from the west. The keen eyes of guests and crew searched for the tell tail signs of ' misty blows' and tall dorsal fins breaking the surface of the water. We were however, unable to find those illusive creatures, L Pod. It wasn't until we headed for San Juan Island that members of J Pod were seen foraging in the late afternoon light. It was truly magical to find J 27, 'Blackberry 'a large male Orca, taking slow dives and creating misty ' blows ' with other members of his family. We headed back to Victoria with very happy guests on board. Another great adventure on these west coast waters.

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure July 11 9am

The early 9 am sail of the Ocean Magic traveled east past Trail island and across Haro Strait toward San Juan Island. It was in the Strait that we suddenly found 'Orca'. Members of J pod were bucking the tide, the wind, waves and the approaching fog bank that was quickly moving up Haro Strait. Capt Scott , with Naturalists Casey,and Danielle on board took us through the fog where we were able to see the J 2's , which included J2 , J 1 , J 30 , J 19 and J 41. The whales while traveling, delighted us with exuberant behaviours that included spyhops, breaches and tail lobs. At times the misty environment shrouded them in fog creating a surreal effect. Our return trip took in some sights of Harbour Seals at Trail Island and the familiar Gray Whale in the Oak Bay area, was relocated. It was seen lifting its head above the surface, spooking a number of gulls hovering over a bait-ball. It was another exciting wildlife trip on west coast waters and our guests had a great time.

Another gorgeous day on the water whale watching with Captain Scott, First Mate Casey and naturalists Rhonda and Danielle. We headed up towards Boundary Pass to see members of the southern residents which today had a mixture of J, K and L pods. With the late afternoon sun and plenty of whales it was a great day to be on the water. A variety of activity was on display as we saw some breaches, tail flukes, tail slapping, spy hopping and general overall playfulness from the groups. Captain Scott just had to let us float around while the whales put on a show. With action from what seemed like every direction the only problem we had was deciding on where to look at these magnificent animals. It's hard to describe but every time you see these whales its like time stands still and you are absorbed in the moment. On the way back the lucky passengers were also able to catch a glimpse of a couple of porpoises.

With lovely sunny weather, and stunning west-coast scenery all around, a trip on the water to find the amazing wildlife this area has to offer is just the thing! British Columbia is experiencing the warm, hazy days of summer and there is no place better than being on the water.The Ocean Magic 2 set sail for San Juan Island at 3.30pm Saturday afternoon, with Capt Scott at the helm. We headed east across Haro Strait and north to catch up with the reported Orca that were heading south past Kellett Bluff. These were members of both J Pod, and K Pod. K 40, K21 and J 26, were easily identified. Many others close to shore, showed active behaviours that included, spyhops, breaches, cartwheels and tail slaps.The Tall ships, Pacific Swift and Pacific Grace were enjoying the Orca spectacle with us. Our expert crew, Michaela, Casey and Liz shared their knowledge of all things wild. It was another stunning adventure under blue skies and a chance encounter with the Gray Whale on our way back to the harbour.

The Ocean Magic 2 left the harbour at 12.15pm Saturday under sunny skies and choppy seas. Capt Scott was in the wheele house and Casey, Michaela, and Liz were our expert crew for this wildlife adventure. We headed east to Oak Bay where we encountered the Gray Whale, a Baleen whale that feeds primarily on bottom dwelling, small crustaceans found in the mud. This animal has been seen for 2 weeks in this vicinity. It was busy foraging as usual and thrilled the guests on board with a close pass. Once near the brink of extinction, they are now protected. One could see all the orange, yellow and white patches of crusted barnacles covering its head. Following this encounter we traveled further east toward San Juan Island where we met up with members of the Southern Resident community of Orca, the fish eaters. Because the waters were very textured it was hard to identify many of the whales that swam by. It appeared that members of J Pod were traveling with some of L Pod whales. With plenty of wind in our hair we returned to Victoria. This was another exciting trip with ' Prince of Whales '

The 12 noon Zodiac Wildlife Adventure was set against sunny skies, Capt. James "Radar" took our passengers east to San Juan Island. Here "Radar" put us in great position to view Killer Whales. We had members of J and L pod. James filled us with information on the whales marine environment and answered all the questions. The whales put on a great show with many breaches as they worked there way south along San Juan island. We then headed back through Oak Bay enjoying the wonderful views. Just a spectacular wildlife adventure with "Prince of Whales".

Summer is here and it is sizzling hot and so are the wildlife trips heading out daily with 'Prince of Whales'. Who would guess that three species of whale could be seen in just one 3 hour whale watch trip.That is exactly what happened on Wednesday afternoon! With Capt, Anna at the helm of the 3.30pm Ocean Magic, and an all girl crew on board, Mika, Danielle and Sophie, our guests were given a thrill of a life time watching a Humpback Whale, a Gray Whale and five Orca, including a tiny calf . These ' Orca ', the fish eaters, were members of LPod, the family group known as the L 12's. They were just south of the Victoria waterfront and traveling slowly west in flat calm water. L 41, the large male named ' Mega ',was very impressive. To view 3 different species was simply awesome! The sunny, hot weather made for a very pleasant and most memorable wildlife trip for our guests.

With the sunny, warm weather now upon us and plenty of whales to be seen in our picturesque west coast waters, one can sure anticipate a thrill when taking a trip in one of the many Zodiacs or ' Ocean Magic ' vessels that ' Prince of Whales ' has to offer. Our late afternoon trip on Tuesday, July 6th, took us east our of the Harbour and then north to Turn Point where Orca were reported to be coming down from East Point. It wasn't long before we could see those familiar dorsal fins breaking the surface of the water as they made their way closer to us.' Granny 'J2, and ' Ruffles ' J1, were in the lead. 'Granny' at 99yrs of age surprised us with two big breaches, and Ruffles, at 59 yrs, gave us good looks at his majestic form. It was so amazing to see more of J Pod heading our way, albeit not the entire pod at this time. A female headed by with her youngster. Although they were far apart at times their direction of travel was south past Turn Point Lighthouse. Mt.Baker, Jelly fish and large Tankers also caught the attentions of the crew, Capt Scott, Mika, Danielle and guests. This was a great wildlife adventure, in perfect conditions that created big smiles once again!

Capt. Scott took the 3.30pm Ocean Magic 2 vessel out of the harbour late, Monday afternoon, for parts east and north of Victoria. We were on our way to Haro Strait to see those magical, 'ORCA ' that everyone wishes to see on any whale watching adventure. We weren't going to be disappointed! The weather was perfect as we headed north to where we could encounter these fast moving black and white mammals. They were heading south past Kellett Bluff at Henry Island, and moving fast. They were on a mission. Thrilling to watch their porpoising behaviours in the blue water. J 1 'Ruffles, 'and J 2 'Granny,' were the leaders. Although they seemed to be moving as single animals most of the time, we did see many individuals, especially the big boys, of J Pod. Our crew members, Mika, Danielle and Michaela shared their wealth of knowledge with the guests on board. One or two Harbour Porpoises and a Gray Whale were seen on our return trip. This was one of those very special trips with Prince of Whales and the Orca once again.

The Ocean Magic was set free from the dock and Capt. Gord slipped us out into the wonders of Vancouver Islands southern waters. He was set on following up a report of Killer Whales headed north along the northern tip of San Juan Island. We toured Victoria's waterfront and past Oak Bay out into Haro Strait. We crossed Haro and followed up San Juan Island to Pender Island. Here we caught up with members of J pod. These Southern Resident Orca were spread out, with J2 Granny and J1 Ruffles leading the way. We also saw J8 and J19 with her calf J41. It was great to see them in the wild, working the water in search of their diet of salmon. We then began our way back to Victoria, Capt. Gord had a few more things for us to see. There were Harbour Porpoise in Haro Strait, always elusive and very shy and as we swung through Oak Bay, we slowed and took in the sights of a lone Grey Whale working the shallows. This bottom feeding whale was gently breaking the surface for air, then down for a few minutes to feed. Our Naturalists Scott and Danielle past on vast amount of information on the local marine environment and wildlife. As we left the Grey Whale we spotted some Habour Seals basking on some rocks. This was a yet another great wildlife adventure with Prince Of Whales!

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure July 2 9am

Captain Gord slipped the Ocean magic from the pier in Victoria's inner harbour at 9am, and the adventure began. Our crew of Mika and Lashelle briefed the passengers on the area and the different types of marine wildlife. Our trip headed east, to Rosario Strait where our intrepid captain put us in perfect position to view Killer Whales. These were members of J pod, Resident Orca. They were working their way west towards open water. There was breaching, spyhops and mating behavior as they swam in the calm waters. Our trip then took us to Oak Bay, where there was a report of a grey whale. Gord quietly approached the area and sure enough there it was, close to shore. The Grey was working the shoreline, up for a few breaths then down for a few minuets. Just a pleasure to take in the peaceful nature of this gentle giant. We then traveled along Victoria's picturesque waterfront back to the inner harbour. This was yet another picture perfect wildlife adventure with Prince of Whales.

Our wonderful Capt. Anna and her knowledgeable crew, Mika, Sophie and Stewart headed the Ocean Magic 2 vessel with many international guests on board, out past the breakwater. We traveled east past Trail Island where Harbour Seals were seen, and across Haro Strait in search of Southern Resident Orca, the fish eaters, along the west side of San Juan Island. It was here that we first came across two of K Pod Orca, K 21 'Cappuccino', and his sister K40, 'Raggedy'. They were followed by several other Orca all heading south. Mothers and young baby orca followed close to shore. It appeared that J 28 'Polaris' and her young calf J 46, were among this group. They would drift one way and then another, eventually all turning north again. A couple of Orca put on quite a show of breaching. This gave our guests a rare sight of some of their exuberant behaviours. On our return to harbour a couple of shy Harbour Porpoises delighted us with their presence. Seeing all this west coast diversity made for a thrilling adventure once again.

The 12.15pm Ocean Magic vessel with Capt Scott in the wheelhouse, and crew members, Casey, Rhonda and Sophie on board set sail to the east , passing Trial Island lighthouse, where Harbour Seals were spotted on the low lying rocks. With plenty of sunshine, a little summer breeze and slight chop on the water, we were bound to have a great time. A chance encounter with a young Gray Whale off Oak Bay, made for an exciting beginning to our adventure. Two very shy Harbour Porpoise were spotted on our way over to False Bay, San Juan Island, where we observed several members of J Pod , one of our Southern Resident Pods, that are frequently seen at this time of year. A big male Orca, J 27, affectionately know as 'Blackberry ' was seen with other members of his family. They were well spread out and foraging for their favourite food, salmon. Our time with these magical creatures was soon over and we had to return to the harbour. It was another delightful encounter with these much loved Orca of the west coast.

With extremely flat conditions out on the water today, our guests were going to experience a most enjoyable trip. The weather created an ideal situation for spotting wildlife. We soon found marine mammals, those shy Harbour Porpoise that set the tone for our Sunday afternoon trip. We headed east and south past San Juan Island toward Whidby Island. Capt Scott and crew members Mika, Rhonda and Sophie kept our guests informed of the wildlife present. It wasn't long before a Minke Whale surfaced to the surprise of all, near Hein Bank. A few members of L Pod, fish eating Orca, were reported earlier in the Whidby Island vicinity and we found them well spread apart, and traveling leisurely north. Members of this Pod, were identified as a female, L 12 'Alexis ', and Skana L 79, a big male, who wowed us with a double breach and some active tail lobs. Other Orca were seen foraging off in the distance. This was an amazing encounter for our guests with those delightful Orca once again.

Our 4.30pm Ocean Magic wildlife adventure this Saturday afternoon, took us east and then north up Haro Strait in search of those constant moving Orca. Large, noisy marine traffic share these waters with the wildlife. The Orca had traveled on the flood tide to Turn Point, 2 hrs after we had seen them at False Bay. We caught up with them at the Stewart Island Lighthouse. J 27, 'Blackberry' was traveling near J 28 'Polaris' a new mother since November 2009. Her young calf was seen close by with another youngster. Other members of J Pod, fish eating Orca, were observed foraging far apart in the late afternoon light. They all appeared to be heading north. We watched for a while in pleasant viewing conditions, with Mt. Baker looking very majestic. Other marine mammals seen this trip were Harbour Seal and Porpoise. Our expert crew ,Capt. Scott, Casey, Rhonda and Sophie shared their knowledge with our guests. Once again, this was a great 'Prince of Whales ' marine adventure.

A spectacular day of whale watching was had by all those lucky enough to be aboard the Ocean Magic 2. With the sun shining and a light breeze we set off from Victoria harbor just after 9am with Captain Scotty along with first mate Casey and naturalist Lichelle. We headed up towards San Juan Island and it wasn’t long before Captain Scotty had found us some of the resident whales from J-pod. We were very fortunate this morning as the whales decided to stay in relatively one area for almost an hour. This allowed Captain Scotty to shut down the engine and let us just float there while the whales decided to put on a show giving all on board some fantastic and breathtaking views of the animals. The whales were particularly playful this morning with around 7-10 whales splashing about, slapping tails and even a double breach. With the incredible views, warm sun and playfulness of the animals the guests on board left with some incredible memories.

Captain Gord slipped the Ocean Magic from the dock and took us just a short distance out of harbour to view a Grey Whale. This whale has been working the waterfront area for the past few days. Gord then steered the Magic East and went in search of Orca. We headed north up Haro Strait and it wasn't long before we were viewing members of J pod. These were the fish eating resident Killer Whales. We saw many breaches and playful behaviour as the whales headed south towards San Juan Island. With the sun playing hide and seek and the waters calm, it was a perfect wildlife adventure. On our way back to the harbour Gord stopped by some small islands off Oak Bay were we viewed some Harbour Seals. This was a great afternoon on the water with Prince Of Whales.

Zodiac Wildlife Adventure June 19 noon

The Noon Zodiac Wildlife Adventure was pure magic. Our skipper Myles "Mountain Man" had a feeling our day was going to be special, and he was right! On our way to leave the harbour he put us onto viewing a Grey Whale. This gentle whale is a bottom feeder, using its baleen to filter the food. We then carried on east past Victoria's picturesque waterfront and across Haro Strait to San Juan Island. Here Myles put us in a great position to view Killer Whales. We had a members of J, K and L pod working the shoreline area. We saw many breaches and playful behaviour as the Orca milled around in the calm waters. Yet another truly spectacular wildlife adventure with Prince of Whales.

It was one of those glorious late afternoon Ocean Magic trips, that allowed for fantastic viewing of the incredible west coast scenery that can be found in these waters. The mountain scenery was spectacular. With Capt. Gord and crew members Rhonda and Casey on board, we headed deep south from the harbour, and traveled along the Washington coastline in search of a Humpback Whale that had been reported earlier. Alas, it remained illusive, however we had great looks at, cruise ship and tanker traffic traversing the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We also saw Harbour Porpoise, and California Sea Lions lounging at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. A number of bait-balls where gulls and sea birds were diving for fish were observed. Our return trip took us past Esquimalt Harbour where several naval ships were gathered to help celebrate Canada's Naval Centennial. It was another fantastic wildlife adventure with 'Prince of Whales',

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure June 8th

With the longer days , more sunshine and warmth and plenty of marine mammals around, one is sure to have a good time out on the water with 'Prince of Whales'. Our Tuesday noon trip took us out past the Cruise ship moored at the breakwater, east past Trail and Discovery Islands and across Haro Strait to the west side of San Juan Island. We observed a number of Harbour Porpoise foraging in Haro Strait and took time to view these shy creatures. Our wonderful crew shared their knowledge with the guests on board. A few members of L Pod, the L 12 family group of the Southern Resident Orca clan were foraging off False Bay San Juan Island. It was L 41, 'Mega ', born in 1977, a mature male, and his two sisters, L 77 'Matia ' and L 94 'Calypso' with her calf, that gave us great looks at these incredible marine mammals. Mt. Baker looked impressive today. Even the 'Clipper' vessel jetted past on its way to view the Orca.It was another fabulous encounter with west coast wildlife.

Our Saturday Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure was pure wildlife magic. Capt. Gord took the Ocean Magic out of Victoria's inner harbour and out past the breakwater into perfect conditions. Sunny clear blue skies and flat calm water. Our search for wildlife took us south east to East Bank to a report of Transient Killer Whales. Once on scene our crew past on a wealth on knowledge to our passengers about Killer Whales and the local marine environment. They identified the Orca as the T30's and T102. These Orca are the top of the marine food chain, eating marine mammals like Harbour Seals and Sea Lions. These magnificent whales were headed south and our skipper positioned us perfectly for a beautiful pass. Just another amazing day on the water, sun, blue skies and Orca with Prince Of Whales!

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure. June 3 3:30pm

With an all girl crew, and Capt. Anna at the helm of the 3.30pm Ocean Magic, we were sure to have a fantastic time this calm, sunny afternoon. Other crew members, included Mika Biologist, Danielle and Michaela as Naturalists. They were to share their wealth of knowledge of the marine life in these waters with our many international guests on board. Our trip took us east past Trail Island, where we saw Harbour Seals. Then across Haro Strait where several Harbour Porpoise were spotted. We found our Resident Orca, members of J pod foraging along the west side of San Juan Island. We saw ' Ruffles,' J 1 and J 30, 'Riptide ,' off by themselves. Other members of J Pod Orca were really spread out, so we spent our time watching members of the 'J 17 ' family group.The three baby calves were having a ' whale of a time ' being rambunctious youngsters. We watched mothers and calves breaching, porpoising, tail lobbing and backward swimming. Our return journey took us past two adult Bald Eagles on their favourite Channel marker.It was a truly magical afternoon with 'Prince of Whales ', made memorable, with sightings of Orca. The Victoria Harbour was a busy place upon our arrival back to dock with cruise ships departing, seaplanes, a helicopter , tug-boat and the Coho Ferry arriving.

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure May 30 12:15

Our 12:15 Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure took us east to San Juan Island. Here our veteran skipper Scott put the Ocean Magic in a wonderful spot to view three Transient Orca. One large male T40 "Captain Hook" and two females T86a & b. We watched as these magnificent mammals worked the shoreline as they cruised by. Their favorite food, Harbour Seals, were in great abundance on the rocky shoreline. Our crew of naturalists Mika, Rhonda and Michaela answered our passengers questions and passed on a wealth on knowledge about Killer Whales and the local marine environment. Once again a wonderful adventure into the wild west coast waters with Prince Of Whales.

Our wildlife adventure for this Monday afternoon was set against cloudy skies, however, the sea was flat calm and conditions good for finding wildlife. Those much sort after Orca, however, remained illusive. A good number of Harbour Porpoise were visible and delighted our guests as we headed east and north in search of marine life. Our Capt Anthony, and crew of Scott, Anna and Sophie shared their wealth of knowledge of this very picturesque and productive area with those on board. Our trip took us past Trail Island. Harbour Seals, Bald Eagles, sea ducks and gulls were also seen. At the bluffs on Henry island we found 'pair-bonding' of Pelagic Cormorants at nest sites. Mouflon sheep and Sika Deer were seen on Spieden, an island of the San Juan group, Washington. The tall ships of the S.A.L.T.S organization of Victoria and other marine traffic were also encountered during our interesting wildlife adventure.

Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure May 12

The 12.15 Ocean Magic trip headed out of the harbour, with Capt. Anna at the helm, Biologist Mika, Naturalist Derrek and Danielle. Our Prince of Whales senior skipper Mark, was seen returning to the harbour in his yellow zodiac. It was almost perfect conditions for spotting some of the marine life in these nutrient rich waters. We headed east and then north up Haro Strait where we found a 'bait ball ' with interested gulls and Rhinoceros Auklets milling around. A report of a Gray Whale that was seen off Spieden Island in the San Juans, was soon found foraging along the west side of the Island. We spent some time here and then found other marine life around the backside of the Island that included a pair of Bald Eagles and several Harbour Porpoise that were foraging in the tide-line. Bull kelp was also seen floating on the water. Harbour Seals and Sita Deer were also seen on Spieden Island. The crew shared their wealth of knowledge with our international guests.

Our Saturday Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure was set against sunny skies and a little wind. Our crew of Captain Tyler, and crew mates Mika ans Scott took our passengers east in search of west coast marine wildlife. Our trip took us past Trial Island and up Haro Strait. We encountered Dall's Porpoise and Harbour Porpoise as we made our way up Haro Strait. We also took in the sights of many marine birds, Glaucous-winged gulls at a Bait ball, Pelagic Cormorants on Henry Island bluffs and we saw in the distance Turkey Vultures and Bald Eagles. Harbour seals were plentiful on the many small Islands off Oak Bay and Trial Island. Just another spectacular Marine Wildlife Adventure with Prince of Whales.

With our all girl crew and Capt. Anna at the helm of the noon, ' Ocean Magic ', we were bound to have a great wildlife adventure. We headed east in bright , but windy conditions. It was a mixed bag of weather throughout the three hour trip, however we were in luck and got to see, if only fleetingly, Harbour and Dall's Porpoise in Haro Street. We travelled past Henry Island in the San Juans, and saw Pelagic Cormorants nesting. A visit to Spieden Island, Washington, gave us good looks at Sika Deer, Mouflon Sheep, Harbour seals and Steller Sea Lions. It was on our way back to Victoria, at the Chain Islands, that our biologist, Mika suddenly caught sight of black fins in the aqua marine water. We discovered two Transient Orca moving fast through the waves. We had a male,T 87 and female,T 88. Our crew shared their wealth of knowledge with our many international guests.

Looking for 'WHALES' can take us east, west, south and north in these waters. Our guests on board the Sunday afternoon Ocean Magic were in good hands with crew members, Capt. Scott at the helm and Naturalist Derrek. We left the harbour and headed west to view several Elephant Seals, many California and Steller Sea Lions, lounging on rocks at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. A number of Harbour Seals were also seen at this historical lighthouse. We turned east after a tip came from the office that two Transient Orca had been seen much earlier. We search diligently for these top predators but never found them. Three types of Cormorants, Brandt, Double-crested and Pelagic along with many Rhinoceros Auklets were seen on our travels. A small flock of migrating Brant Geese passed by. Conditions were perfect for spotting some of the interesting bird and wildlife along the BC west coast this afternoon.

Our Wildlife trip this Saturday took us out of the harbour and east toward Haro Strait where we turned north and travelled in search of those much sort after 'ORCA' , that remained illusive today. With Capt. Anna in the wheel house, Biologist Mika and Naturalist Chris on board, we were sure to see something of interest in these productive waters. Our first observation was of Harbour Seals at Trail Island. A flock of breeding plumaged Bonaparte's Gulls were seen on the way to Spieden Island. It was here that Mouflon Sheep were seen grazing on the dryer side of this privately owned island. Our return trip took us past San Juan Island, USA, where we saw the white light-house, called Lime Kilm. This landmark indicates the whale watching state park. We passed Kelp Reef where two Steller Sea Lions lounged on the narrow rim at the base of the marker. We also noticed some Bull Kelp, the fasted growing marine plant in this area. With the right conditions and direction of the stiff winds blowing this afternoon, the intrepid para-surfers were out jumping the wake of our vessel. Although the weather was less than ideal, our guests on board thoroughly enjoyed their travels in these picturesque inland waters.

The Ocean Magic Marine Wildlife Adventure on Sunday was awesome. The sun was shining and the seas calm as we headed south. Captain Tyler was headed to meet up with Capt James "Radar" who had spotted some Transient Orca. Once on scene we found ourselves viewing two groups of Killer Whales. These were the Apex Predator on the worlds oceans, the Mammal eating Killer Whale. We followed off to one side as they made their war south east. Our Naturalist's Mika and Derek filled us with their knowledge of our marine environment and facts about Orca. On our trip back we stopped off at Trial Island and saw some Harbour Seals and many Bald Eagles. Another great Prince of Whales Adventure.

With our intrepid skipper Capt. Tyler "Sideshow" the Ocean Magic slipped from the dock and sailed out of Victoria's picturesque inner harbour into the Strait of Juan De Fuca. Here Capt Tyler took us South to a reported sighting of Transient Killer Whales. Once on scene we took in the sights of two Orca. One large male who was identified as T103 and one female Orca who was unidentified. These apex predators showed off their hunting skills as the female broke way from the male and swan fast and furiously away, only to return. The male went deep and surfaced near the female and the two worked in turn on what they had caught under the water. It was awesome to watch these apex predators do their thing. Our First Mate Derek "D Rock" gave us all the play by play and answered all our questions. We then took a tour of race rocks and took in the sights of harbour seals and elephant seals. Yet another special marine wildlife adventure with Prince of Whales.

Zodiac Wildlife Adventure April 15

Our international guests were given a rare glimpse into the world of the Transient Killer Whale on Zodiac trips today. Skippers James and Myles took the yellow Zodiacs out of the harbour and into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It was a great day to be on the water for the visibility was excellent for spotting marine wildlife. Although the sky was heavy with cloud, it was flat calm on the water. We encountered many Orca, 25 or more socializing together, west and south of Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. They were very active with behaviours of breaching, spy-hopping, porpoising, backward swimming and diving. Transients are the top predators of the ocean, the marine mammal hunters. They are usually seen traveling in small family groups of 2-6 individuals. This number of Transients together was most unusual and a rare treat for all of us. We left then heading toward the east and San Juan Island. A visit to Race Rocks Lighthouse, gave us looks at California and Steller Sea Lions, Harbour and Elephant Seals. It was another wonderful encounter with west coast wildlife.

Zodiac Wildlife Adventure April 14

It was every thing our guests would have wanted on their first trip out to see the exciting marine wildlife these waters on the west coast have to offer. Sunshine, blue sky and great visibility along with calm water, made for great conditions. We had guests from New York, Saskatoon and Victoria on board. Skippers James and Miles headed the I pm Zodiac out of the harbour and turned east in search of the large group of Transient, Killer Whales that had been reported. These are the marine mammal hunters. We caught up with them and were thrilled to see so many together. With several tail- lobs and spyhops by individuals, the small family units that usually travel alone, were actually grouped up, and traveling as one big group. They headed toward San Juan Island and then split into two groups. We left them at this stage and went to find some Harbour Seals, Bald Eagles, Cormorants, Harlequin Ducks, Rhinoceros Auklets, and Pigeon Guillemots at Chain Islets. It was another magical day on the water.

It was another one of those brisk, windy April afternoons when the Ocean Magic vessel left the harbour with Capt. Anna and first officer, Scott and Naturalist Mika on board. We had fair skies above and a little wave texture all around. Visibility was great for spotting whales. We headed west and found T 14, a large bull Transient killer whale, affectionately called Pender. He was travelling slowly out west , past the picturesque Sooke shoreline. He was looking for his favourite food, marine mammals. We watched him for a while at the surface and taking deeper dives while foraging. We then headed to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, where we had good views of Elephant and Harbour Seals, as well as a few Steller Sea Lions on rocks. Our wildlife trip concluded with sightings of breeding plumaged Rhinoceros Auklets, and a Great Blue Heron. Another splendid afternoon full of west coast wildlife.

The Ocean Magic set out from Victoria's Inner Harbour with Capt. Anna at the helm. She took us out past the breakwater and headed east to a reported sighting of Transient Orca. These mammal eating Killer Whales were spotted in Rosario Strait just off Bird Rocks. Once on scene we were treated to some great views of 7 Killer Whales. T14 Pender and T87 were the two Mature Male Orca, each with the tall dorsal fin towering over the waves as the worked through the water. Our crew of Scott, Gord and Mika past along their wealth of marine knowledge and answered all our passengers questions. These Orca were feeding as we watched, milling around the water with many gulls following their every move looking for scraps of food. It was yet another perfect Day on the water with Prince Of Whales.
